Alberta border crossing

OK, this morning I sent my passport to Buffalo... will keep my fingers
crossed that it will return safe and sound and soon.
As soon as it arrives, I will be landing. I live in Edmonton, so I am
planning to drive to the Alberta/Montana border.
I am have been reading other people's stories on this forum, but still
have couple of questions, I hope somebody will help me:

1)The most favorite customs station seem to be Coutts (I think because
it is 24 hour), but I was thinking of going to Carway (it seem to be
open on weekends 7AM-11PM.) Anybody has crossed through Carway?

2)Do all border crossing stations have a buffer zone, where I can turn
around before entering US (I don't have US visa)? When you leave
Canada, do you have to first go through Canada customs to exit Canada?
If yes, then they will be asking where are you going :)? This might be
a stupid question, sorry... I just never crossed by car.

3)We currently don't have a car. I am planning to rent one. So, when I
rent it, should I rent it with authorization to enter US? Or since, I
will be just turning around in the buffer zone, I don't even have to
mention that I will be involved with customs?

4)Anything else I should know about crossing border with the method
described? I won't be having any "thing" to import. I already brought
them when I arrived as visitor ;). My car I will be importing later
and I know that I will have to notify immigration officer and put it
on the "goods to follow."

Thank you in advance!

Not my situation, but now I'm curious:

1) Does a person have to go physically "around the flagpole" to present
themselves for landing? It seems (at least at the large border crossing I
use) that one could approach the Canadian immigration office from the
Canadian side without really getting to the border line.

2) Could roxolana land at the international arrivals area at the Edmonton or
Calgary Airport (presuming they have one there)?

It is quite possible that Carway does not have Immigration on duty, check

No, at some of the smaller border ports US/Canada share the building.

Have your goods to follow list with you. Make sure it includes the car.

A few Questions please.

What would happen to a person if they lived in say, Innuvik, or
Iqualit or Yellowknife?
Would they have to travel thousands of miles to re-enter Canada , but
never really leave, just for a few minutes.? Is this just to give pen
pushers a meaning in life?

Those in Iqaluit normally take the shuttle over to Nuuk, Greenland. ;)
